THE JOURNEY BEHIND A DRAWING - GIRAFFE DUO
Welcome to my “Giraffe Duo”. They are a stand out feature in my Studio...and not related to my “Ocean Art Naomi” series or theme. Yet, every person that ventures into my Studio is drawn to them. I have had so many offers to purchase this duo...even for me to “name my price”. But the original artwork is not for sale. I drew this dynamic duo circa 1989 during my Graphic Art Studies. Little did I know the significant role they would go on to play in my life.

I first met my soulmate Mauro in 1989, whilst displaying my Art folio to fellow work colleagues, and the Giraffe Duo were a stand out feature. Mauro later declaring that was when he first fell in love with me. We officially started dating in 1990. We married in 1999, and were blessed with 2 beautiful daughters. I went on to work in the residential construction industry, designing beautiful homes for my clients, whilst raising my family in Victoria.

Sadly Mauro was diagnosed with an aggressive Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in 2013. After a strong battle and fight post a full Stem Cell Transplant, Mauro passed away in 2014. He was 44yrs old. My life as I knew it was changed forever.

Determined to “make each day count” I set out to live the best version of my life possible. It was time to listen to my heart and soul...and chase my dreams. In 2019 I moved to Queensland with our 2 daughters. The Giraffe Duo came with me. Living on the Sunshine Coast by the Sea...my creative side was calling to me again. I kept looking at my Giraffes whom took pride of place in my home next to a photo of Mauro...and decided that after nearly 30yrs...it was time to start drawing again.

“Ocean Art Naomi” was brought to life in January 2020.

Prior to Mauro’s illness we had spoken on numerous occasions about wanting to foster care for other less fortunate children. He was an amazing Dad to his daughters, and a fun loving Uncle to his Nephews and Nieces. He always had his inner child inside...playful, caring, giving, loving, carefree...funny. He always stated that he wanted to be a ‘big brother’ to the kids that surrounded him. He often said that he wished that he had been a Primary School teacher.

In 2019 I met Gavin and Rae-lee Curtis, an amazing selfless and giving couple that donate much of their own funds and time to an amazing cause to further educate and support underprivileged children in Tanzania through the “School of Tim Harrington”. As part of my Ocean Art Naomi - “Prints for a Cause” series, I have decided to offer reproduction prints of my Giraffe Duo, and have nominated the “School of Tim Harrington” to donate 50% of the purchase funds of every single print (with no end date) to this great cause. This will help greatly towards the education of under privileged children in Tanzania, East Africa. I also dedicate this print to Mauro’s unfulfilled wishes, and I am pleased to know that the gift of giving carries on through his memory...and through this print of my Giraffe Duo that has come to mean so much to me on my life journey to date.
